City temporarily pauses closure of Rossdale homeless camp following community resistance
A homeless camp in Rossdale is still standing after the City of Edmonton called for its removal Tuesday morning.
About 50 supporters rallied around Camp Pekiwewin in an effort to stop the city from tearing it down. A notice from the city posted at the site said the parkland would be closed as of 9 a.m. Tuesday morning and residents would need to leave.
At that time, six peace officer trucks sat in the Re/Max Field parking lot across the street from the camp, but no one approached it. A handful of residents packed up their belongings and took an Edmonton transit shuttle bus to one of the city’s 24-7 shelters.
