If Dufferin County appears to be a healthy, wealthy community, John Oosterhof made the case why appearances can be deceiving.

Oosterhof, the former mayor of Grand Valley, is a member of the Dufferin County Poverty Reduction Task Force. He described to Orangeville council during its meeting Monday (Jan. 15) why the county isn’t quite the prosperous place it may seem.

The county spent $4.2 million on social assistance benefits in 2016. And Oosterhof said that expenditure is projected to reach the $4.7 million mark in 2018.

“We should care because it (poverty) costs us a lot of money,” said Oosterhof.
